Join Us for a Joyous Shavuot Celebration Featuring the Ten Commandments and a Delicious Dairy Buffet

Shavuot is one of the most spiritually powerful holidays in the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the monumental event of the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai over 3,300 years ago. On this day, the Jewish people experienced divine revelation, receiving the Ten Commandments and entering into an eternal covenant with G-d.

This year, the Chabad Center for Jewish Life of Buffalo warmly invites you to join our community-wide Shavuot celebration on Sunday, June 2nd at 5:00 PM. The event will take place at Chabad, 1016 Lafayette Ave, and promises to be an inspiring and uplifting experience for individuals and families alike.

What Is Shavuot?

Shavuot (also called the Festival of Weeks) occurs seven weeks after Passover and marks the culmination of the Omer count. It is both a celebration of the Torah and an agricultural festival that coincides with the wheat harvest in Israel.

Unlike other Jewish holidays, Shavuot has no specific mitzvot like matzah on Passover or the shofar on Rosh Hashanah. Instead, the heart of the celebration lies in reconnecting with the Torah and reaffirming our commitment to G-d’s wisdom.

On Shavuot, we stand together—men, women, and children—to hear the Ten Commandments read from the Torah, just as we did at Sinai. It’s an opportunity to relive the awe and unity of that sacred moment and to bring that energy into our modern lives.

What to Expect at Chabad Buffalo’s Shavuot Event

We’ve prepared a vibrant and meaningful program to help you and your family experience the full beauty of Shavuot:

🕔 Event Time & Location:

  • Date: Sunday, June 2nd, 2025
  • Time: 5:00 PM
  • Location: Chabad, 1016 Lafayette Ave, Buffalo, NY

📜 Hear the Ten Commandments:

Central to our Shavuot celebration will be the public reading of the Aseret HaDibrot—the Ten Commandments. We encourage every member of the community, from the youngest children to the most senior adults, to be present for this important mitzvah. Just as all Jews stood together at Mount Sinai, so too do we gather now, reliving that historic moment as one.

🍰 Enjoy a Delicious Dairy Buffet:

No Shavuot celebration is complete without dairy delicacies! Join us after the Torah reading for a lavish dairy buffet, featuring traditional favorites like:

  • Cheesecake
  • Blintzes
  • Quiches
  • Ice cream
  • And more delightful dairy dishes!

There is a beautiful tradition of eating dairy on Shavuot, symbolizing the purity and nourishment of Torah, and the “land flowing with milk and honey” that was promised to us.

🌸 Family-Friendly Atmosphere:

Our Shavuot event is designed to be family-friendly, with engaging activities for children and a welcoming environment for all ages. Whether you’re a longtime member of the community or exploring Judaism for the first time, you’ll feel right at home.

Why It’s Important to Hear the Ten Commandments on Shavuot

According to Jewish tradition, the Giving of the Torah wasn’t a one-time event—it’s something we relive every year on Shavuot. Our Sages taught that when we gather to hear the Ten Commandments, it’s as if we ourselves are standing at Mount Sinai.

Even young children are encouraged to attend, just as children were the “guarantors” of the Torah at the original event. Their presence ensures the continuity of our tradition and strengthens the bond between generations.

This is why it’s so important to attend in person, along with your entire family, and to experience this unique spiritual moment.

Be Part of Something Eternal

Shavuot is not just about remembering the past—it’s about shaping the future. By attending this celebration, you are making a statement that Torah is central to your life, your family, and your identity.

Come be inspired, connect with fellow Jews in Buffalo, and enjoy the warmth and joy of Jewish unity. Whether you come for the Torah reading, the cheesecake, or the sense of belonging, you’ll leave uplifted and enriched.
